Malmangernuten

On Friday night, we had a group of the teachers that we have spent a lot of time with over to hang out and play some games.  We sat outside for awhile and enjoyed the sunset and then went inside.  On Saturday, Ashley, Jenni, and I hiked Malmangernuten! It's a mountain right next to Rosendal which is 890 m high.  It took us about an hour and a half or so to reach the top and then we sat around up there for awhile.  It was an absolutely beautiful day outside and the view was outstanding! We could see our entire town from one side, mountains from another, and the fjord from another.  We got some amazing pictures from up top! There were a couple parts which were kind scary, but other than that it was a great hike. (I'm a little sore today though..) Then on Sunday we went to see the glacier with some of the teachers from the elementary school.   We went on a little walk up to the lake in front of it and it was really cool to see.  It was a great last weekend in Rosendal and now it's time for the last day of school. Sooooo sad L  I'm afraid I'm going to cry in front of my students!! I really don't want to leave tomorrow! Tomorrow we'll head to Bergen for the day and then our flight leaves on Wednesday morning. I'll be back in Iowa Wed night at 6:15...craazyy! I already told my mom I want Huhot for dinner! hahaha

Here's a few pictures from things recently.

everything's so green now!

saaadddd. :(

Welll...we only have 2 more days of school left til we have to leave. I think we're all going to be a mess on the way home. I really really don't want to leave this place, and I'm going to find a way to come back some day! (whether it be for a week or 15 years haha) Everything is starting to turn really green and it's getting even prettier outside. This town is just absolutely beautiful!! The plan is to hike Malmangernuton this weekend..should be interesting! It's 890 meters high. I'm going to miss my students sooo much. They're absolutely hilarious and so full of life! They sang a country song in Norwegian to me yesterday and it was so funny!

So Jenni, Kristina, Ashley and I decided that Count on Me by Bruno Mars was our theme song for the trip
If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see
I'll be the light to guide you

Find out what we're made of
What we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like one, two, three
I'll be there and I know when I need it
I can count on you like four, three, two
And you'll be there 'cause that's what friends
Are supposed to do, oh yeah, ooh, ooh

Honestly, they are a big part of why this trip has been so awesome! We have had such a great time together and have definitely been there for each other when we needed it!

This afternoon I took a 2 hour nap in our backyard by the fjord and even got some tan lines! Tonight we took a little night hike up to the Baroniet.  We're trying to enjoy as much outside time as possible in these last couple days here!

But for the rest of us, the sovereign freedom of traveling comes from the fact that it whirls you around and turns you upside down, and stands everything you took for granted on its head.

So Easter Break was an absolutely amazing week! My friend Neha who is student teaching in Spain and I went to Dublin and Stockholm for the week.  Originally we were also supposed to go to Helsinki for a day, but long story short, some plans fell through and we ended up spending 4 days in Stockholm instead.  We did so much in one week and it would be way too much to write about it all so I’ll just give a brief description of my week. (warning: not brief at all, longest post ever, feel free to not read)

Sunday, April 17
On Sunday I got up early (after staying up super late with Kristina and Jenni) and packed my stuff up and got ready to go. Jenni and Kristina made me a delicious breakfast before I left which was so nice! Then they walked me to the bus stop around 10 and I set off for my vacation (after we nearly teared up just having to leave each other for a week…not sure how we’re going to survive after we go home!) Then I spent the entire day on planes, in airports, and on buses until I finally met up with Neha in Dublin at 8:00 p.m. We spent about an hour trying to find our hostel (only to find out we had passed it 4 times already) and then spent some time walking around Dublin.  We were both exhausted so we didn’t do much that night. We did get Subway though, which I was thrilled about J I have really been missing my American fast food!!

Monday, April 18
On Monday, we decided we would set out to concquer as much of Dublin as possible on foot.  First stop: Guinness Brewery.  We spent about 3 hours in the factory (although the guide said it would only take about an hour to an hour and a half…) and got to see stuff about how they brew Guinness.  While we were there, we learned how to pour the perfect pint and got to practice…we even passed and got a certificate! Then we went up to the sky bar and happened to meet up with some Norwegians that had been sitting behind us on the bus the night before.  They also happened to be teachers and were eavesdropping on our whole conversation the night before without telling us that they were also from Norway…real sweet. Anyways, we talked to them for awhile and then headed out. We also may or may not have eaten Subway in the bathroom of the brewery because we were too cheap to buy food…oh well. Next we stopped at the Brazen Head which is the oldest pub in Ireland.  We even left a dollar bill there with our names on it that said we love Iowa, so if you ever get the chance to go there, make sure to look for it. Then we went shopping for awhile, got some super cheap stuff, went to the castle and a couple churches, and walked around a lot more of Dublin.  At night we headed out to a couple Irish pubs and even met some Irish girls that we hung out with for most of the night. It was a good time! We may or may not have had McDonalds twice in 24 hours also….whoops. I never eat McDonalds at home but for some reason I crave it here!

Tuesday, April 19
Tuesday was a beautiful day and we decided to start it off with fish and chips for lunch.  We ate them in the park at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and it was delicious! We spent a little time just relaxing in the sun and then we headed out for some more sightseeing.  We went and walked through Trinity College and walked around more of Dublin. (we did A LOT of walking this week) Then we happened to stumble into a little Irish pub with a guy playing the guitar and singing and he just happened to sing Galway Girl while we were there…and I may have about died. (if anyone doesn’t know, this is the song Gerard Butler sings to Hilary Swank in P.S. I love you) Then we took a bus and went outside of Dublin a little bit to see Killiney and Don Laoghaire (another place from P.S. I love you) and I may have just found out that the pub we went to in Dublin was the one that they filmed the pub scenes of P.S. I love you in…and I didn’t know that til about 20 seconds ago!! So moral of the story, I love that movie, and I was in heaven. I forgot to mention I also listened to the soundtrack the entire day Sunday to get prepared for my trip.  Then that evening we headed to the airport around 11 because we had a 1 a.m. flight to Stockholm.

Wednesday, April 20
We arrived in Latvia around 6 a.m. and went outside to get a picture with the sign (just to prove we had been there) Then we eventually arrived in Stockholm around 11 a.m. We were exhausted so we checked into our hostel and took a little nap.  Then we walked around our area for a little while and got some pizza…which the guy put a heart on and eyed Neha the entire time we were eating. (super awkward for her, hilarious for me) We met a lot of people from all over in our hostel and had some interesting conversations with them.

Thursday, April 21
Today we had to move to our new hostel which just happened to be in a very inconvenient location from everything else in Stockholm but it was located right next to a metro station so that was good.  Our day started off a little rough because Neha lost her 24 hr train pass about an hour after buying it (Neha, if you’re reading this, sorry for mentioning it…I know you’re still bitter about it, but don’t forget you’re not allowed to mention it anymore) Let’s just say, this was just the beginning of a few of our struggles we had with Stockholm that week.  We spent most of Thursday doing some shopping (and trying on ridiculous outfits) which was a pretty good time! We also went to Gamla Stan which is the “Old Town” part of Stockholm and walked around for awhile.  The buildings were beautiful and it was a really neat area to see.  The Royal Palace is also located there.  When we got back to our hostels, we realized we didn’t have towels and the owner was gone for the night. Therefore, we got the pleasure of using a T-Shirt as a towel…this just added to the fact of how dirty we were feeling by this time of the week from wearing the same clothes all the time.  Ohhh the joys of travelling.  Anyways, we went out at night and hung out with some people from New York, Germany, and Sweden.

Friday, April 22
This morning we got to experience another struggle with Stockholm.  First of all, we saw this pamphlet about the hop on hop off boat and thought it would be fun because it would take us to all of the major sites and we would get to go on a boat.  Well, we failed to read the date correctly and later found out that it didn’t open for the season til the next Friday. We found out there was a hop on hop off bus we could take instead but then we thought “meh, who needs that” so we decided we would try to walk Stockholm by ourselves instead…and I’ll say we did pretty well! We literally spent the next 8 hours walking anywhere we could in Stockholm and seeing as much as possible. We did take some time to relax near the water for awhile, though! One thing we did on Friday was go to the Vasa Museum, which everyone said was a must. The museum is for the Vasa which was a ship that ank in the Stockholm harbor in 1628 and they reconstructed the ship and it’s in the museum. The museum was all about the ship and what happened and it was really interesting! We spent awhile there reading everything and took about a million pictures (most of them funny). Also, while we were waiting in line for the museum, I just happened to run into my roommate from Norway who was there with her family! Completely random considering Stockholm is huge!! That night we went to the Ice Bar in Stockholm which is the oldest one and that was a pretty good time! Then we headed out for the night and ended up meeting a really cool girl from England who was living in Sweden for the year.

Saturday, April 23
On Saturday, we woke up at 9:30 a.m. but were completely convinced it was 10:30. (our roommates failed to tell us what time it was after hearing us freak out about waking up an hour later than planned) The time zones are really screwing with our heads! Anyways, we had our next struggle with Stockholm today…and this one is the worst. It’s still a bitter topic. Long story short, we booked a tour to see the Archipelago Islands around Stockholm on a boat (stupid boats) and we missed our tour.  We were given incorrect directions and got lost and realized we had missed it when we saw the boat come sailing by…pretttyyy frustrating.  Well it took us awhile to recover emotionally, but we decided to make the most of our day anyway, which included taking a lot of dorky pictures while perfecting the self timer, eating ice cream, going to the dalahorse museum, and walking around a lot more. It ended up being a really good day, but started out rough. That night we didn’t want to do much because Neha had an early flight the next morning, so we just walked around our hostel area and took about 100 pics. Then we had one last struggle with Stockholm…by locking our padlock keys in our locker.  We both had a set in our purses but we stupidly put our purses in the locker and locked it.  Therefore, our hostel owner got the pleasure of cutting our padlock for us…whoops. Stockholm was absolutely beautiful, but it wasn’t so good to us!

Sunday, April 24
We had to get up early and head to the airport because Neha had a flight at 7:30 a.m. Mine wasn’t til 11:30, but I’m not very good with directions so I didn’t want to risk having to get to the airport by myself so I went with her at 5:15 a.m. I spent all day travelling again and got back to Rosendal at 7 p.m. to be greeted by my lovely roommates! They had dinner and hugs prepared for me when I came in the door. Easter dinner consisted of Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, and corn…it was delicious!

All in all, it was a great week.  I’m very happy to be home with clean clothes and a towel again. We had a lot of laughs and struggles along the way, but it was awesome. I got my fill of fast food, and will be good for my last week in Norway. I was only gone for a week and I missed Rosendal and my roommates so much, so I don’t know how I’m going to manage at home! I’m really missing everyone at home a lot too, though, and can’t believe we have graduation already. I apologize for writing the longest blog either, and I’m really impressed if you read the whole thing. I honestly wrote it more for my own good so I can remember in the future! I’m going to try to add a post of a bunch of my pics from the week but my blog has been difficult recently and hasn’t been letting me add any.

Fjellhaugen skisenter

Well, yesterday was a pretty fun-filled day for us student teachers! First of all, we spent the whole school day at Fjellhaugen skisenter. The whole middle school packed their skis/snowboards and piled on some busses for the 20 min drive to the ski place near Rosendal.  We were lucky because we had perfect weather! It was sunny all morning and pretty warm.  A couple of the teachers brought some extra skis for us to borrow so that was good. When we got up there, we soon found out that a lot of the kids don't even ski most of the day. They usually ski for awhile, but they spend a lot of the day making snow forts or just hanging out with each other.  They made campfires and roasted marshmallows and hot dogs and sat around and talked.  It was unfortunate though because the big ski lift was broken so they were only able to go on the smaller hills unless they wanted to walk to the top (a few crazy people did this!) so that might be part of the reason that some of the kids weren't skiing. A lot of them are insanely good so they woudl be really bored with the small hills. Jenni, Ashley, and Kristina tried out some cross country skiing and Aaron and I did some downhill skiing with a couple of the teachers and my 10th grade students. I actually surprisingly did pretty well! I didn't fall once on the ski hill the entire day! Now the ski lift...that was a different story....they didn't have the normal chair ski lifts that we have, instead they had these lifts where you stand on your skis and grab this thing on a rope and it pulls you up the hill. Now, let's just say I had a little difficulty with this concept. I may have fallen down about 3-4 times throughout the day while trying to get onto the ski lift. One time, my skis got crossed causing me to fall. one time the thing slipped out of my hand. And another time I just got off-balance and fell backwards. I think my students got a few good laughs out of this, but I didn't mind because I was also cracking up most of the time. I have a few bruises today though and my arms are super sore from holding onto the lift thing. One of my students helped me a lot though, so I was really thankful for that! and hey, now I can say that I went cross-country and downhill skiing in Norway! J
Yesterday afternoon, we were all worn-out and sunburnt from our morning, but we had to get prepared for "America night" for the 8th graders. They have a youth group thing for each of the individual grades once in awhile and one of the teachers asked if we would host an American themed night for the 8th graders. It was a ton of fun and I think the students had a great time! We made burgers with onions, garlic, and cheese in them, baked beans, and got lots of chips and pop.  Then for dessert, we taught them how to make s'mores which they LOVED. We also entertained them with some American games for about 2 and a half hours.  We taught them how to play football, capture the flag, ping pong around the world, and a couple other games. It was a big success!!

3 days til Ireland!! crazy!

Potato, Tomato

We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again -- to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more. – Pico Iyer

student teachers with the cooperating teachers and ISU supervisors

So last week our supervisors from Iowa State were here, so we were pretty busy! On Wednesday we had a lunch with all of our cooperating teachers, supervisors, and other people from the education department.  They served deer meat and potatoes and it was delicious! The dinner was a ton of fun and we got to talk to some different people.  We also decorated the dinner table with Iowa State gear! The pictures above are from the dinner.

Last weekend was probably one of the most fun yet! Friday night, our principal's son and a couple of his friends came over and hung out with us for awhile. We played some cards and talked and then we all headed to the Snikkeriet for the night. (we're kind of regulars now) The night was a lot of fun and we saw a few of the teachers there.  We laughed a lot and met a few more people from around here.  Afterwards, we were invited to a  little jam session in the back.  We went there for a couple hours and talked with some more people and listened to a couple of them play guitar and sing.  Pretty good night!

Saturday I felt the need to wake all of my roommates up at 8:30 a.m....woops! They didn't mind too much though because it was one of the nicest days we have had so far! It was absolutely beautiful weather this weekend.  Aaron ran a half marathon in Bergen this weekend, so we had a little girl time.  First thing we woke up and made some waffles and eggs..yum. Then we decided we didn't want to waste the wonderful weather, so we went for a hike by the waterfall. It was great besides the part where my shoe got stuck in mud and came off my foot..haha. We've decided that anyone who sees us around town probably things we're a pretty weird group of Americans haha we're constantly cracking up or acting stupid.  For example, when we were on our hike we saw a huge rock so we had the great idea of getting up on it and just laying there in the sun for 20 min or so. We think we looked pretty funny.  After our walk we headed back to our cabin and laid out on our dock for awhile.  We laid out there in tank tops and took a nap while our neighbors sat outside in their winter jackets, we think they thought we were nuts. But we can't resist a little sun! That afternoon, we got to go to a bbq at one of the elementary school teacher's houses. We grilled some hot dogs over a fire and brought s'mores to share with everyone.  We were there for a few hours and had a great time. It's so cool how welcoming everyone is!

On Sunday, we had some great weather again.  Our principal showed up at 10:30 a.m. and asked if we wanted to go boating later..so of course we said yes! We spent a couple hours on the boat and got to go sailing for part of it.  I also got to drive the boat for awhile which was pretty cool J

I have a ton of new pictures to add from the past couple weeks so I'll add a post with a bunch of them soon! Also..I have officially decided I MUST move to Norway. I honestly can't imagine never coming back here..it's pretty much the most amazing place in the world. I can't believe how much I'm going to miss it. Not only will I miss Rosendal, but I will really miss the people I got to share my time here with...they are absolutely amazing! I couldn't have asked for better. We keep telling everyone here that we want to move here and of course they keep saying "well do it then!" We then ask them if that's even a realistic possibility and they all say it would actually be pretty difficult.  We would have to learn Norwegian to be able to move here and especially to ever be able to teach. It seems like it would be a pretty hard language to learn, so I think that's probably out of the question. One of the elementary teachers told us we could move into her basement and cook/clean and live there for free...this seems like a more realistic option, might have to look into that! haha seriously though, this would be the most amazing place to live, but I suppose I have to come home. speaking of that...I leave in 3 weeks. We  already know that we're going to be a complete mess on the way home. L Jenni and I have already started looking for plane tickets to come back on June 1st..hahaha. I'm pretty sure if we came back in the summer we would really never want to go home..it's supposed to be even more beautiful. I told my students that I really wanted to move here and they all think this is a great idea too. They move to the high school in Husnes next year and they think it would be just great if I came and taught them there...hahaha.

Oh yah, and I finally planned my trip for Easter break! Neha and I are going to Dublin, Ireland; Stockholm, Sweden; and Helsinki, Finland!! We leave the 17th and I will get back to Norway the 24th. I am pretty excited!!! Should be an awesome week seeing some other countries and getting to hang out with her! Also, I hear that the shopping is a lot cheaper in Dublin so I am verrrry excited for that! I haven't been able to really buy anything in Norway yet since everything is so ridiculously expensive. I won't have internet at all next week though, so won't be able to update about the trip until I get back! I'm really looking forward to it but I'm actually kind of dreading leaving here for the week..how will I ever leave for good...ahhhhhh!

Tomorrow, we don't have school because we're having a ski day...how cool is that! The whole middle school is going to a montain nearby to go skiing! I'm pretty excited to watch all of the kids ski/snowboard and do a little myself. I'm sure they're all really good so that should be fun! I'm not looking forward to them seeing me fall on my butt every 5 min though...haha I'm sure they'll think it's hilarious! It's supposed to be really sunny, too, so I better wear a lot of sunscreen!

eg elske norge for alltid = I'll love Norway for always!
